Harper Creek Falls

A beautiful falls accessible by a moderate trail in a Wilderness-like area. The final scramble down to the base of the falls is quite difficult, however. It's a popular swimming hole in the warmer months.

Directions

Driving

From Morganton, head north on NC Hwy. 181. Turn right on Brown Mountain Beach Road, just over 10 miles from where the highway becomes 2 lanes. Go about 5 miles and turn left on Wilson Creek Road (State Road 1328). The parking area is on the left after about 7 1/2 miles.

Trail

This is a Moderate hike of about 1.5 miles one-way. The Harper Creek trail (#260) begins at the back of the parking lot and climbs steeply uphill. It crosses the ridge, where another trail comes in from the right - stay straight. The trail will come to Harper Creek and pass through a big primitive camping area. Raider Camp Trail goes left; bear right. After about 1/4 mile more, a side trail to the falls goes left (level) while the main trail goes right (steep). You'll have a steep scramble down to the base of the falls at the end of the side trail.
